T. Fogarty, MD — Brief Legacy
• Passed away at the age of 91
• Pioneering cardiac and vascular surgeon and medical innovator
• Inventor of the Fogarty balloon embolectomy catheter, which transformed treatment of acute arterial limb ischemia into a minimally invasive surgical procedure, performed via arteriotomy using a catheter, rapidly restoring blood flow and saving limbs
• Key contributor to tissue heart valve development and to early EVAR technology
• AneuRx stent graft (FDA-approved 1999) paved the way for modern EVAR = Endovascular Aneurysm Repair
• EVAR: catheter-based stent grafts exclude the aneurysm from circulation, preventing rupture with lower risk than open surgery
• Holder of more than 190 medical patents; founder and co-founder of multiple medtech ventures
• Played a pivotal role in advancing medical simulation, enabling innovation through leadership, mentorship, and support of simulation-based technologies
• Recipient of the Presidential Medal of Technology and Innovation (2014)
