ASE ( American Society of Echocardiography) Mourns the Loss of Dr. Roberto M. Lang, Pioneer in Echocardiography
Dr. Roberto M. Lang, a global pioneer in echocardiography and former president of the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE), passed away on June 10, 2025, at the age of 73 after a brief illness.
1. He was a key innovator in 3D transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, technology that revolutionized cardiac imaging and enabled advanced procedures such as MitraClip and TEER.
2. Dr. Lang served as Director of the Cardiac Imaging at the University of Chicago, where he worked from 1985 until his passing.
3. He was known for his charisma and kindness at conferences, where he generously shared his expertise in both large lectures and small, hands-on sessions.
4. Over his career, Dr. Lang published more than 700 manuscripts, authored 12 textbooks including ASE’s Comprehensive Echocardiography, and led the writing of ASE’s widely cited 2015 guidelines on cardiac chamber quantification.
5. He held numerous leadership roles within ASE, served as President of the National Board of Echocardiography (NBE), and sat on the editorial boards of major cardiology journals.
6. He was a passionate global volunteer with ASE Foundation, participating in outreach programs in Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, and Vietnam.
7. Dr. Lang earned his medical degree in Argentina, trained in U.S., and remained a lifelong educator and mentor to physicians worldwide.
8. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lili, his children Gabriel and Daniella, and two grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on June 15 in Chicago.
