New AI program delivers rapid, accurate echo video assessments
December , 2024 |
PanEcho, an advanced AI program developed by Yale university , efficiently interprets echocardiograms—ultrasound images of the heart—by analyzing multiple video views to assess key aspects of cardiac health.
Trained on over 1.2 million echocardiographic videos, PanEcho can perform 39 diagnostic tasks simultaneously, offering comprehensive assessments of cardiac health.
In evaluations, PanEcho achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic accuracy of 91% or higher for detecting conditions such as left ventricular enlargement, systolic dysfunction, and hypertrophy.
It also attained an accuracy of 93% or higher for identifying severe aortic and mitral valve diseases.
Additionally, PanEcho estimated left ventricular ejection fraction with a mean absolute error of 4.4%.
Presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2024, PanEcho has the potential to streamline echocardiographic interpretation, especially in settings lacking immediate access to expert readers.
By rapidly ruling out abnormalities, it could expedite patient care and improve outcomes.
As an open-source model, PanEcho encourages further research and development in AI-assisted echocardiography, aiming to enhance diagnostic accuracy and efficiency in cardiovascular care.
In practical terms, PanEcho’s ability to deliver swift and precise evaluations is particularly beneficial in settings lacking immediate access to expert cardiologists.
By quickly identifying or ruling out cardiac abnormalities, it enables timely medical decisions, which is crucial in emergency situations or in remote areas with limited specialist availability.
Moreover, PanEcho’s comprehensive analysis can enhance routine cardiac care by reducing wait times for echocardiogram results, thereby expediting diagnosis and treatment plans.
This efficiency not only improves patient outcomes but also optimizes workflow within healthcare facilities.
In summary, PanEcho represents a significant advancement in echocardiographic interpretation, offering practical solutions for both everyday clinical use and in situations where specialist expertise is not readily accessible.
