Who Was Dr. Atul Butte?
A visionary pediatric endocrinologist who became one of the world’s leaders in medical data science.
Key Achievements and Work:
1. Shifted from clinical medicine to data science early in his career, realizing that doctors were not using the full power of the data they generated.
2. Led the use of big data in medicine—turning complex datasets (like genomics, EHRs, and clinical studies) into tools that improve diagnosis and treatment.
3. Founded multiple biotech companies focused on using data to discover new drugs and repurpose old ones.
4. Directed informatics for the entire University of California Health System, helping unify and analyze health data across hospitals.
5. Discovered new uses for existing medications, including finding that cimetidine (an old stomach drug) might help treat lung cancer.
6. Mentored hundreds of students and researchers, always encouraging curiosity and collaboration.
7. Believed that everyone should benefit from data, not just big institutions—he called it “scalable privilege.”
Legacy:
Dr. Butte passed away in June 2025 at age 55. He is remembered not only for his scientific brilliance, but also for his energy, kindness, and belief in sharing knowledge to improve lives.
