Towards Reviving Heart Transplantation and a National Organ Donation Movement
As we approach the landmark Jordan Cardiac Society (JCS) Congress on October 16, 2025, we proudly highlight one of the most important messages of our Heart Failure Working Group:
the revival of heart transplantation as the ultimate and definitive therapy for patients with end-stage heart failure.
Jordan carries a pioneering legacy in this field. Several successful heart transplants were performed in the 1980s and 1990s, with the last recorded procedures carried out in 2019. Yet, despite this history, progress has stalled in recent years. The time has come to reignite national efforts and re-establish heart transplantation as a viable, sustainable, and life-saving program in Jordan.
At the core of this vision lies a National Call for Organ Donation — a Religious and Humanitarian Priority, uniting faith, medicine, and national will to save lives.
We strongly endorse the proposals of our colleagues stressing the essential involvement of the Ministry of Awqaf and Jordanian Christian authorities, ensuring that organ donation is embraced as both a religious duty and a national responsibility. This will secure public trust, foster societal acceptance, and build a culture of generosity that saves lives.
Why It Matters
• One organ donor can save up to 8 lives through the donation of the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, and intestines.
• Dozens more can benefit from tissue donation — corneas, skin, bones, and heart valves.
• Heart transplantation remains the only definitive solution for patients with advanced, irreversible heart failure.
Conclusion
This is more than a medical necessity — it is a moral and national obligation. By uniting faith, medicine, and national willpower, Jordan can restore its pioneering role, offering new hope to countless patients who have exhausted all other treatment options.
We therefore call upon religious leaders, health authorities, and national institutions to join hands in this mission — transforming organ donation into a truly national, religious, and humanitarian project of the highest priority.
