Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Launches New Risk Calculator for Complex Aortic Surgical Procedures
April 28, 2025
1. Publication:
• The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) has published a new risk calculator focused on ascending aorta and aortic root surgeries.
2. Background:
• Aortic surgeries now represent about 11% of all major cardiac surgeries in the U.S.
• Accurately assessing operative risk in complex aortic procedures remains a challenge.
3. Purpose:
• The calculator aims to empower surgeons with better risk evaluation tools, enhancing patient-family discussions and improving informed decision-making.
4. Development:
• Based on the STS National Database, covering data from more than 67,000 patients.
5. Procedural Groups Included:
• Bentall procedures (aortic valve replacement with root replacement)
• Ascending aorta + aortic valve replacement
• Valve-sparing root replacement
• Isolated ascending aorta surgery
6. Additional Impact:
• The tool also supports clinical research, aiding the design and evaluation of new trials, especially those comparing open surgery versus less invasive alternatives.
7. Other Updates:
• In October 2024, STS also released new risk calculators for esophagectomy and pulmonary resection.
