• Cardiac surgeon Rakesh M. Suri, MD, DPhil (Corewell Health, Michigan, USA) performed the world’s first single-port robotic mitral valve repair.
• Conventional robotic mitral repair typically requires five ports; the new approach uses one robotic port plus a tiny access incision.
• The technique aims to:
* Reduce surgical trauma and postoperative pain.
* Simplify the procedure.
* Enhance patient safety.
* Accelerate recovery.
• The first patient, a 60-year-old man, resumed many normal activities within one week after surgery.
• The milestone represents another step toward increasingly minimally invasive mitral valve surgery.
• Long-term outcomes remain to be established.
