Anxiety and Depression in Atrial Fibrillation: Prognostic Significance

• Post-hoc analysis of 12,614 patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) from European and East Asian prospective registries.
• Anxiety and/or depression symptoms were associated with higher risks of:
• Composite adverse cardiovascular outcomes (HR 1.26)
• All-cause mortality (HR 1.31)
• Major adverse cardiovascular events (HR 1.44)
• Cardiovascular death (HR 1.87)
• Patients with moderate-to-severe symptoms had the highest risk.
• Symptomatic patients were more likely to be:
• Female
• Symptomatic from AF
• Living with heart failure
• Findings support routine assessment of psychological distress as part of comprehensive AF management.
