Developed and launched in the United States.
1. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) has launched a new mobile app to help heart and chest doctors quickly estimate surgical risks at the bedside.
2. The app provides real-time risk scores using data from the STS National Database, one of the most trusted sources in cardiothoracic surgery.
3. It predicts:
• Risk of death, stroke, or kidney failure
• Expected length of hospital stay
4. It includes calculators for:
• Multi-valve heart surgeries
• Aortic valve surgeries (including after TAVR)
• Tricuspid valve surgeries
• Thoracic procedures (like lung cancer or esophagus surgery)
• New in 2025: Aortic root and ascending aorta surgery
5. Where is it used?
• Developed and launched in the USA, the app is available worldwide.
• It supports doctors during pre-surgical consultations, in emergency rooms, and even in ICUs.
6. Why it matters
“Having reliable tools at your fingertips helps improve decisions and outcomes,” said STS President Dr. Joseph Sabik III.
7. The app is free and available for iPhone (iOS) and Android.
